Spokane Community College Waitlist???

U.S.A. Washington

Published

I am from a small farming town outside of Spokane Washington but I live in Colorado now and I was talking to a friend of mine that is also from Spokane(lives in Denver) and she mentioned that SCC didn't have a waitlist:eek:

Is that true??? I was sort of shocked even more so because the wait list are so bad here in Colorado. When I left there(it was over 5 yrs ago) I thought they had one but didn't know if it had changed. It just made me curious I plan on someday hopefully going back to Washington to work so I like to know what is going on back home :p

TIA!

Thanks I found one for around $750. Do you know how much they make in this area? If you don't mind me asking how long have you been on the waitlist? and how is the waitlist determined? First come first serve or is it based on grades? I am not familiar with the area, are there any other schools you would suggest? I also heard that some schools go off of points???

I appreciate all your help!

I've been on the list since June '09. CNA's make around 10 an hour plus shift deferential. SCC is a strictly wait list program, no points. Whitworth downtown has the Intercollegiate school of nursing. They aren't waitlist. I'm not sure of their system, but the people that I knew that were trying to get in had to reapply each semester.

Specializes in Family Practice, OB/GYN.

i will graduate very soon from scc as an rn. when i started the waitlist was less than 4 months, last time i looked at the numbers there are just over 200 (there is no way to know your exact place, not every employee can access the list of names, i know this for a fact, i was a work study that had access to the number on the list, the college staff needs authorization to access the list, and it is not done just by asking! in fact is well 'guarded').

the school takes 70 students, twice a year, last fall they only took 60 due to budget cuts, they are back to 70. as of a few weeks ago, the expected wait is 18 months to 2 years for those on now, the list grows by 30 or so at the end of every quarter, as pre-req's are met. many years ago before the point system the list had grown to a 5 year wait, part of the reason they went to the point system, i hope they do not return to it! if you did not get straight a's in pre-req's, you didn't get into the program. i had given up after 3 trys and resturned once i heard the point system was gone.

scc is the only college with an lpn to rn program in spokane, gonzaga university has a 3 year bsn program, but so far every student i have met states the school discourages you from becoming an lpn. there are 3 other universities that have bsn programs, but i think unless things have changed they are rn to bsn, eastern might have the door-to-bsn still going, but the cost never made me want to explore that as an option! and the universities have more pre-reqs and an extremely competitive admission process.

scc also has a lpn to rn that takes 2 quarters.

best bet is seeing amy or georgeanna, keep in mind they are the only 2 healthcare program counselors, they are very busy and only see people with an appointment unless you really luck out! i used to recommend an email rather than a phone call if going in was not an option! they can be reached through the scc website. www.scc.spokane.edu

cna training/testing is done at scc as well. there are many local ltc facilities offering the training and paying for the test if you stay working for them as well, i used to work at a facility that charged $40 for the classes and of course the testing was done at scc for $100+. they paid fairly well, most of my nac's told me they made around $13 with the evening shift differential.

sorry for the long post!

like i tell everyone that asks, get the pre-req's done, get on the list and before you know it, you get 'the letter' saying you're in. in a few years you'll be in nursing school or sitting there wishing you were if you don't get started!

Congrats on getting into the program. There must have been some drops, we had a full house at the orientation. You might want to go to the office, the one with the windows, at the health building and get your paperwork for the physical. That way you can begin to track down immunization records and maybe get your physical taken care of. They give physicals at the student health center, Building 9 - Room 149, on a drop in basis.

See you in class. 7:30 a.m. April 5th. Everyone has to be there early on the first day.

Michael

I'm finishing my last prereqs this quarter and will be getting on the waitlist. Can you tell me what day you were able to go in to do the paperwork to get on the list? We're planning a summer vacation and I don't want to be away on the day they do it.

:up::yeah::)

Congrats dallet6 on getting into the program.

Dallet, I can't private msg. If you send me your e-mail I will scan and send you everything they gave us at the orientation.

I've been on the wailist at Spokane Community College for 9 months now. I got on the waitlist September 09. Anyone still on the list and in the same boat?

So Dallet6 did you end up getting into the program Spring 2010? I am currently #9 on the list at SCC. I'm in the same position you were in february 2010 but a bit worse since they are only taking 50 for the fall start.

Yes, I'm currently in the program finishing up my first quarter. I have a friend that is starting with the fall group. Her orientation is June 22nd. They usually find out a lot of people change their minds or can't get in after all (I heard there were a handful that didn't get in my quarter because they had felonies). So, I'd look toward hearing about getting accepted after that date. Good luck!

Thanks so much for the encouragement Dallet6! I'm sure you can understand my eagerness to get started. I was in the program at SCC 12 years ago and I didn't finish and I have regretted it ever since. I am an older student with 4 kids. Ages 16, 13, 9, and 7. How was your first quarter? Do you have any advice for an incoming student? Did you have to take Surg 105?

BarnOwl,

I am also finishing up my first quarter. It was hard but not as hard as I was worried about. You will probably get in if you are 9th on the wait list. Hopefully you will find out if you are in before orientation. If not, maybe someone will send you the orientation info like I did for dallet.

As dallet said people get dropped from the list for lots of reasons. Felonies are a big reason, but the one that surprised me:confused: was when they said that if you had had your child removed by CPS for any reason and for any length of time you will be dropped.

Good Luck

I hope you are right about my possibility of getting in for fall quarter. The fact that they are only taking 50 students in the fall makes me a bit nervous. I'm not getting any younger and would like to start asap. I'm surprised that they don't let people know in advance about the CPS issue. Did you find out about that at your orientation? As you know, it takes alot of effort just to get through the prerequisites. It seems people would want to know this before they invested time and money to the point of acceptance into the program, don't you think? I have a meeting in the Lair on the 21st for those of us who remain on the list. Hoping to gain more insight into my chances at that meeting. I really appreciate you taking the time to respond. Any insight into what I have ahead of me is greatly appreciated! Thanks StudentMike!

BarnOwl,

Yeah, They told us about the CPS issue at orientation. I think that took out a few people. I think that they should be a little more upfront about the dis-qualifiers. I think that we lost about 20% of our students after orientation. So with that average you should be able to get in.

I am an older student, 40, also. Although there are students older that me in the class.

Good Luck, I hope to see you in the fall.
