Hi all!

I'm moving to D.C. in August to start orientation at Children's in the NICU (so close! and graduation in 19 days!) and I'm hoping to also become a volunteer EMT --> paramedic. I've always loved the aspect of emergency medicine, but my heart is with the babies.

Does anyone know of any EMT or paramedic classes in the DC/MD/VA area? I'm having a hard time trying to find any!

Thanks!

Anne Arundel Community College has a EMT and Paramedic courses. I should think that most of the other community colleges have classes also.

I will say that learning to be a nurse is hard enough without adding classes in another type of health care. Go through orientation, get secure in your practice and then become an EMT if you still want to

I would venture to say that nursing isn't that hard. If you're willing to do the work necessary to get to be competent (which is substantial, admittedly), then it's not all that difficult. Yes, there's a learning curve, but it's not like it's impossible.

Thank you for your information on the CC!

It's not that I think nursing is sooo impossibly hard. It's just with moving to a new place, orienting to a new job ( and nursing school does NOT fully teach you how to be a nurse) and going to school ALL at the same time would be very difficult. Not impossible, just very difficult.

Just suggesting that you don't start EMT school until the spring and not in August for the fall semester. With drive anything is possible. Depending on where you are going to live, definantly check out the cc's.

Oh, for sure! I don't think I can do it until spring anyway since I'll be rotating days/nights, plus classroom teaching intermingled somewhere in there. Plus, no $$ : )

Here's the link for Virginia Office of EMS. They should have some info on training courses. I think most volunteer FD's and rescue squads will pay for your training if you become a member:

Also here's the link to a department I know of in PG county, MD:
