Has anyone worked at Virginia Hospital Center and is willing to comment on their work environment? What kind of benefits do they offer, especially in terms of tuition reimbursement? I'm quietly exploring options for the future. Thanks!

It's a nice work environment. In terms of tuition reimbursement, it's the best around. If you work full time, which is considered to be only 32 hrs or greater, after your first 90 days you are eligible for 100% tuition reimbursement with a one year work agreement. They'll pay 100% for any of the schools on their list which include Marymount, NVCC, George Mason, and a bunch of others. It's a great way to get your master's degree paid for or get your RN while you work as a tech, unit secretary, etc. The pay isn't stellar, but it's comparable to INOVA's pay. Good health benefits. The work environment largely depends on the unit. Like any hospital you have your fair share of lazy nurses who sit around reading People magazine all night, but you have some really outstanding nurses as well. The physicians are great and there's a lot of opportunity for advancement. Overall I've had a positive experience with VHC. Have you contacted their nurse recruitment office yet?

Thanks for the advice! I've seen a lot of openings lately- is there a reason for all of this? Does Virginia Hospital Center typically have a high turnover? How is the administration? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe there is a union in place. Do you feel that it is necessary? Are nurses treated fairly in scheduling? Is it a punitive environment or do you feel pressured to be the "perfect" nurse?

There have been quite a few openings lately and I'm curious as to why because a few months ago we weren't hiring at all. There are lots of new faces lately. No, there's no union. I'm generally not all that pro-union and I don't really feel it's necessary here. Sure there are things we could improve upon but I've worked in a lot worse places. I even like it better than some magnet status hospitals that I've worked for. I definitely don't feel pressured to be "perfect". If anything I feel that there's a tendency toward laziness amonst the staff and a resistance to being more efficient. A lot of this stuff depends on the unit you work for. Which units are you considering applying to?

Hmm... I'm actually interested in working in the ICU at some point and thought that an ICU at a community hospital would be a good place to start. I just haven't seen any ICU openings, and I'm not sure if I'm ready for it yet. Any suggestions for other areas of the hospital? I don't have my heart set on any particular unit since a great work environment, great people matter more to me.

what is the dress code at VHC? I know the nurses wear colors based on the unit, but do you have to wear scrubs or could you wear regular cut/styled pants in that specific color?

We have to wear scrubs. In the OR or L&D you have to wear the hospital issued surgical scrubs. On all other units you have to wear a white scrub top. The color of your scrub pants is determined by the unit you work on. Some units wear blue pants, others teal, green, etc. The result is you look like a geeky nursing student, but on the upside nobody is wearing embarassing Dora the explorer scrubs or anything.

Can anyone pls tell me the current salary for an RN with one year med surg experience in virginia hospital center? (or starting salary for that matter)

I am currently in Queens NY but may go back to the dc area...also I only have an associate's degree btw.. thanks in advance ya'll
