U.S.A. Virginia

Hello all,

I am considering a move to Norfolk, Virginia to work at Sentara Heart Hospital in the CVICU. I would like to know what the current wages are for RNs. I have one year of med surg experience. Also, if anyone could provide input on great places to live that would be wonderful. I am really looking forward to this potential opportunity. Thanks in advance.

I'm afraid I don't know the starting salary, but I am sure you the recruiter will tell you the truth if you ask. The Sentara system is huge and with only 1 year of med-surg experience, there won't be a lot of wiggle room for you to negotiate there. Just ask them: they will tell you. The cost of living within the region is about average for the nation.

I don't work at the heart hospital, but I hear it is a very nice place. As for the living situation, there are lots of options. So I recommend really thinking about what is most important to you. For example, do you prefer a more urban environment or a more rural environment? How do you feel about commuting? Will you be bringing a whole family or are you coming alone? Do you want to rent or buy? Do you want to be surrounded by young families, older families, single people, young party-goers? etc. You can choose between living at the beach ... to near the beach ... to "middle-America suburbia" ... to downtown urban ... to small town ... to a farm in the country -- all within a 45 minute commute. So figure out what you want before you start looking.

Good luck to you.

Thanks so much llg. I have a lot to think about. I would really prefer to live in a suburban part of town with a short commute from the hospital. No more than twenty to thirty minutes. A family friendly area of town is what I am looking for.

In addition to wages and shift differentials, can anyone speak to nursing satisfaction at Sentara Hear Hospital? All input is welcome. Thanks.
