Places to Live in Hampton Roads

U.S.A. Virginia

Published

Hello,

I am from the Central Virginia area, but have accepted a job at CHKD in Norfolk, VA. I was wondering if any of you could tell me some nice places to live in that area? I will be renting (house, apartment or townhome), not buying a house right now. I have heard the Princess Anne area in Virginia Beach has nice neighborhoods and good schools (I have a 5y.o. and 12y.o.). I was also considering maybe the Chesapeake area as well, but I don't know a lot about what neighborhoods are nice and have good schools. I am looking to live somewhere that is safe, nice area and close to work. I know sometimes traffic can be a problem on I-64 or I-264, so I want to be close enough to work so I don't have to "fight" the traffic when I am working both the morning shift and night shift, since I will be rotating. Any help or suggestions would be great! Thanks!

Thanks LunahRN...I figured it out..LOL!

I live in the Salem Lakes/ Rock Lake area of VB which is a nice safe area near TCC and the amphitheater. I do not have trouble with traffic at all in the mornings and rarely have jet noise issues. I love the schools. I would have moved out of state years ago if I was not so attached to the VB schools.

I've lived in this area since 1982, so I know it pretty well. KD is right next to Norfolk General near downtown. If you are looking to rent, you might look in the areas near the hospital like Ghent. Its gone pretty upscale over the years, but Norfolk has never been all that expensive an area to live. Its got a more urban feel and flavor to it as well, that appeals to some folks but not to everyone.

One thing about this area that you should keep in mind though is that we have a lot of water to cross. If you want to live over in the Western Branch area of Chesapeake as someone mentioned, you will have to commute through one of two tunnels. Both tend to get backed up at rush hour and can make a short commute long and nerve wracking. If you are heading out 64 toward the beach, keep in mind that can turn into a parking lot several times a month. But at least you can get off of it and go on secondary roads unlike the tunnels which act as choke points. Thats why I'm recommending you stay in Norfolk till you get used to the area and then can decide better what suits you. Good luck.

I'm with Bob N Va. Heck I can't believe only one person has suggested Ghent or West Ghent, close to the hospital. I think she would like west Ghent because it does have Taylor Elementary School which is great.

If you work day shift, you better think of that drive home. Traffic can be killer. You could walk from West Ghent.

West Ghent also has a great little neighborhood pool. Mallory Pool. A GREAT place to live!
