Pre Reqs and BSN program courses

Nursing Students Texas (UTA)

I am going to register for my first class this week. I was wondering if anyone would recommend taking two pre reqs at the same time. I was thinking History II and devel PSYC. I work full time and my children are grown. Is this a good or bad idea? Also, what do you do if you are going on vacation in the middle of a semester and have limited to no computer access? Looking for any and all suggestions!

History is a beast: it's 16 weeks of course crammed into 8 weeks of insanity. There's a ton of reading, projects due about every other week and a quiz/test every two weeks. Also, due to the design of the course, you can't work ahead nor can you play catch-up if you fall behind.

I'd recommend taking either History 1311 (History I) or 1312 (History II) alone if possible, especially if you are also working full-time.

Hi Minch,

I took some pre-reqs along w/ nursing classes w/o too much trouble. I took Prof Nurs A along with Texas Gov. Since you can work ahead in Texas, I was able to finish up in 4 weeks, no prob. I also took US Gov, Med Term, and Older Adult all together. I won't say it was easy, but not impossible. I was busy all the time, but the way those classes are structured, it worked out. I also would recommend taking Hist alone, if possible, although I took it with Health Promotion and I survived. I work FT also. Making the decision on combining classes depends upon the type of class, your work schedule, how fast you want to finish, and the amt of work and time you are willing to devote to school. Regarding going on vacation in the middle of a semester w/o computer access......can't see how that would work unless it just so happens to work out that you were able to finish the class early. Otherwise, this would be a problem, b/c there assignments, discussions, and quizzes due every week.

I took Hist 1311 and dev psyc together without too much trouble, but take heed that history is a bear. Lots and lots of work.

I think I have taken trips almost every semester I've taking classes at UTA, but I've always had internet access, and it is a must. Starbucks and McDonalds are everywhere and have free wifi.

As others have said, I would not take HIST 1311 with another course. It is a poorly-designed and poorly-taught course that will take up all your free time and then some.

HIST 1312 is the same, but I actually managed to take an easy course with it (PSYC 3310) but I knew what I was getting myself into.

The two POLS courses are pretty easy. They're great to double-up on with another course.

To reiterate, I highly recommend taking HIST 1311 all by itself or at another college.

So you think I should take those two at a community college? There shouldn't be any problem with transferring them later right?

Only UTA can answer the "any transferring problems" question. I'd guess it's likely they'd take the credits, and if your local CC is in TX, then I imagine there'd be even fewer problems...but otherwise, only UTA knows for certain.

Thanks everyone for all the feedback. It's so helpful to hear from other students! Regarding vacation...I'm going on a cruise and Internet on the ships is usually very slow and costly. Definitely a complication.

I think the cruise is a deal breaker. I don't see how you can take an online course from a cruise ship. I traveled through Italy while taking a full load at UTA without a problem, but Europe is very internet friendly. Cruise ships are not.

I agree. The last thing you need is to have the internet connection drop in the middle of a test, because UTA's policy is to usually NOT reset the exam and let you try again, especially if you are working off of a wireless connection. Most instructors will tell you up front that if you use a wireless connection for tests that you do so at your own risk.

Go enjoy the cruise, then worry about school.

If Texas government starts in August and my cruise doesn't start until 6 weeks into class, would that maybe be something I could complete all my work. I'm looking for any classes that I can work ahead in.

I just took Texas Politics last session, sheesh, you think I could remember, but I don't. I don't think we could work ahead. There is a big assignment due towards the last week of class. And I think weekly quizzes.
