Travel nursing

I want to do travel Nursing, however worried about going from one contract to the other with to much time in between. With the economy i am afraid of finding that next contract. I would be traveling in my fifth wheel and still have a house payment and teenager to raise to support. I would like a few weeks off between contracts, more than that would hurt the bank account. How do you file state taxes at the end of the year if you have been working in many states that year?

Thanks

You didn't mention what your specialty is. Taking up to a month off is usually not a problem with the companies. You don't get paid for that time off though, so it is wise to keep track of the expenses to know how long you can take off and still pay the bills.

I am traveling in my 5th wheel Toyhauler and am getting close to my first anniversary of it's purchase. Last winter and this summer were great. I was in Florida from late November till June and have been in Iowa since. It's starting to cool off and have had the furnace running. Had a couple days where the furnace had an issue but have resolved that. It's much better being on a travel assignment. I am currently doing a Perdiem job and the pay, hours and absence of housing subsidy are making the paycheck look very small. Have a job lined up for Florida in January and things will get back to normal I hope.

It is a pain to have taxes to pay in multiple states. Get ready to shell out a few bucks to your tax preparer, or multiple TurboTax State's. Make sure you are working with someone who understands the rules of various deductions and depending on what state your home base is, what taxes you will be paying on money made outside of the home state. It can be overwhelming at times but I think it's worth it. Now if I could just find a way to warm the floor of the toyhauler I'd be fine.

Thanks for the info! Once I start a contract when should i start looking for the Next one? I am worried about it taking to long to fine that next contract and paying the bills. This is all new to me, any input would be great.

Thanks You

You will want to keep in contact with your recruiter or recruiters. I started out with 8 companies in 1989 but finally found a recruiter that seemed to always know what I wanted and was able to get it. I stayed with her for several years. I am currently ready to go with two companies although I have only used one for the past couple years and have specific areas that I wanted to travel to. If you are flexable and can arrange for licenses in the states you want to visit you will hopefully never be unemployed.
