Is there such a creature as a traveling 'SNF' nurse?

I am an RN with many years in LTC, SNF's, and subacute care facilities in Illinois. I have children in Florida and one has health issues and needs me but I need to work so I thought the fastest way would be to become a 'Traveling' nurse. The problem is locating a travel agency that does Nursing Home placements. I have read where they can assist you in getting an endorsement from the Florida Boards faster.

Is anyone aware of any type of agency that does this type of placement? Due to the nature of the medical problem I am getting my 'house' in order here in Illinois and plan on flying doen within the week. I have spent hours researching on the net but no luck so far.

Thanks in advance for any direction you can give.

All agencies will get such assignments occasionally, but your best bet are the larger agencies such as American Mobile and Cross Country. I don't know of any agencies that specialize. Cross Country used to have a relationship with the FL BON many years ago, but I don't know if that is still true. I doubt they could provide any real assistance other than checking on progress perhaps. If you have an encumbrance, you will have to deal with it on your own.

Thanks Ned.

i looked into Cross Country but they don't work with nursing homes. I will take a look atAmerican Mobile. Thanks for the suggestion.

I have no encumbrances, but getting my license in Florida would allow me to extend my time there and be more help to my family. Besides, I am getting my BSN, have nobody to answer to and traveling and meeting new people and learning about other parts of the country really intrigues me!

Cross Country does do LTC. I see your issue with their site not listing that as a search category, but a Google search showed CC LTC assignments on job boards. An old AllNurses post says that LTC jobs are listed in the medsurg category but I didn't look myself. I would call them!

You don't need help getting a Florida license then, but reimbursement would be nice and most agencies offer that. I would go ahead and start the process as it takes about 30 days.

I used to work with FlexCare and I did a SNF contract with them. The SNF was within the hospital. I have also been offered LTC positions with this agency. Like NedRN said, check with American Mobile. American Mobile has ALOT of hospital contracts and if you need to go to a specific location, they most likely can get you there.

Thank you both. I hadn't thought of reimbursement fees, nice though!

While Florida is my main goal at present, once we get everyone healthy again I'll be ready for other opportunities.
