Tax Question About M&I/ Per Diem

I'm attempting to do my own taxes this year with all my travels. My questions is....do we really calculate the M&I rate x the number of days on an assignment? I went to Chicago & the M&I rate is $49 a day.....that just seems like a huge deduction when I've traveled the entire year!

The IRS website has a table for all the places you've worked. I don't know the name of it offhand.

Sometimes it encompasses the whole state and sometimes it breaks it down. It also changes, I believe in Oct of each year.

You may deduct every day you are away from home. Not just the days you work if you have a legit tax home. i.e the weekends if you only work week days.

Good luck with those taxes. I have 6 to do . I've got 2 done 4 to go..
