Renewals

I am licensed in 7 states and am trying to decide whether to renew state licenses or let them lapse and renew when I am sure I am returning to that state. Any thoughts?

I would keep ones that you think you would like to return to. For me, I have my compact license, but I also keep my California, Oklahoma, and Florida license current for winter assignments and to be close to my family in Oklahoma. You might also place the ones you don't think you'll be using on "inactive" status instead of totally cancelling them. With some states, that will give you a "short cut" to renewing, like not having to fill out ALL the paperwork, only half...

Many states now allow renewal online, and I would not keep any license current, unless it was my state of residence, or a compact state license. This way, when you take an assignment, you can have the agency you are contracting with pay for the renewal, and any CEUs you may need to renew. JMO

Tough question. My answer is it depends. As an example I was licensed in Michigan and moved away. MI doesn't have an inactive status per se. Anyway I just let it lapse as we had no plans to return. Fastforward 5yrs, It was an incredible pain in the tail to renew it. In fact it actually took longer to reinstate it than it did to get it initally via endoresement.
Another example now I come to find out my original state of licensure of which my license is inactive requires anyone who reinstates, applies for inital license or license by endorsement will have to send finger prints.

So I am going to say keep them active. As a benefit I would have to double check to be sure but the costs may be tax deductable.
