UMHB Nurses!

  1. Hey Fellow Nursing Cru. I posted a while back about my acceptance into UMHB CON in the Fall of 2011 and from that I have had the privilege of meeting a few other nurses on allnurses from UMHB. So I figured , why not start a forum for all of us Cru on this network to help each other out with questions and simple conversations. Questions can be about anything from classes, to teachers, to campus buildings, to great places to eat or let out stress in Belton.

Whether you are pre-reqs, just accepted, applying, or all the way up to S2, I invite you to join in this community forum as another way to simply stay in contact, encourage and help each other our as best way as we can!
We could even get together sometime on campus as a fun study break this forum is COMPLETELY open for whatever you feel like posting.
The Forum is yours and hope you enjoy!

Side note, just out of curiosity to see how many UMHB nurses are on allnurses, even if you don't have a question post who you are and what level. I have no idea how many of us are on here and it would be neat to find out

Hi! I will be starting the nursing program in January. No questions. Just joining in. I am new to UMHB and completed my prereqs at Austin Community College. My schedule has been part-time, but will be going full-time in January, so a little anxious about my schedule, but also excited!!! It really is a new chapter in my life.

Hey! I am considering applying to the UMHB nursing program. Can anyone tell me how competitive it is to get in? What do they look for in an applicant? Any help would be great!

I don't know about now, but back in my day (Fall 2008), it wasn't all that difficult to be admitted into the program. This program was also easier for me to get in versus other Texas BSN programs. I didn't have an outstanding GPA. Mine was 3.00ish. I knew others who were accepted with a much lower GPA than mine. The more prereqs you completed, the better chance of being accepted. Of course, the higher your GPA, the better.

Thanks! I sure hope it's still somewhat like that! I am currently a student at TWU. I applied for Spring 2013, but I didn't get in. I had a 3.4 and was eligible for the bump TWU gives for taking 32 hours there. That still didn't help! I had a 75 on my TEAS, but that could of been better. I'm just looking for other options now since it's going to be very difficult to get in at TWU. I have more prereqs than they want so hopefully that will help! I know things probably have changed, but how did you like that program?

I am thinking of applying and trying to start in the spring as well....I have a lot of classes completed, and have tried to get into the ADN program at Temple College, however, I just received my denial letter with the reason for denial being that "my 3.5 GPA was too low" There are so few teachers, and there are HUNDREDS of students applying....so I am going to try another route. I was accepted to the LVN program here, but my goal is to earn a BSN. The LVN program starts on June 1, 2015.

Thats crazy, i was at the LVN program last year at TC, good luck! They usually pick one person to automatically bridge over if you make and keep your grades up and have the classes completed in order to apply to the ADN. I started at UMHB this May and so far LOVE it, but havent found a nursing major yet, thats crazy huh haha

Hi, I do have some questions. How hard was it to get in? I only have a 3.0 and am waiting for my acceptance letter in april. Also, was the program very time consuming? How many hours are actually spent at school/doing clinicals

It's not hard to get in at all! You should get in no problem. The program IS time consuming, but people, for the most part, had time to hold their jobs at least part-time while in school. We were in class around two-three days a week; one day was from 8am-4pm with the second and third day being 4 hours; you also had at least a 12 hour clinical once a week.

I graduated from UMHB two years ago! I'm happy to answer any questions as well.

The program is as time consuming as you make it. You typically have classes two days, and clinical another one or two days, depending on which semester you're in. I was able to work as a student nurse and go back to Austin every weekend to have a life. I was one of the top students in my class, making all A's and one B. Just use your time wisely, and you'll be fine.
