Relocating to Houston from Wisconsin. HELP!

U.S.A. Texas

Published

hi everybody, i'll be finishing my associates degree in nursing at the end of 2009. I also have a BA in psychology and an MS in communtiy counseling. i plan to relocate to houston in the beginning of 2010. i'm seeking information on the starting salary for a new graduate rn, what area to seek housing in (i want to buy a home) and the school system. my son is 6 and currently in a spanish immersion school, i hope to find one in houston so he can continue on that path. i've starting researching the real estate prices and spanish immersion schools. never having been to houston or knowing anyone in houston the task has become quite daunting. i'd like to purchase a home in a family friendly area, in the school district of a good spanish immersion school. in addition, all of the job postings for rn's i've come across require 1-2 years experience....help! salary, house location, and spanish immersion school. thanx

Does anyone know anything about M.D. Anderson? I am also from Wisconsin, graduating in December with a BSN, and am possibly interested in Houston......any insight for this future grad??

Where did you get your information? I did a quick search at HAR.com and found quite a few equally priced homes in Katy, Sugar Land, and The Woodlands

Maybe Commuter is going on "looks". While I do agree that there are reasonably priced homes in Sugar Land, there is definitely a lot of wealth and affluence all around. It is still a great place to live!

hey neighborroonie :-)

are you from houston? from what i've been reading it's probably too big and busy for me. i live in milwaukee, wi,,,about 600,000 people with a pretty balanced racial make up. i'm biracial and the surrounding areas that are smaller seem to have very few minorities. that concerns me.

Houston is big and it can be intimidating but don't let that stop you!!! I would try looking at the 'burbs. As I said, I live in Sugar Land (pop ~70,000+). It feels like a small town but it is so close to Houston that it really isn't. As for racial make-up it is 56% white and 33% Asian (according to Wikipedia). There is diversity here - it may be a different kind of diversity then you are used to.

One more thing, I love Sugar Land and I could say nice things about it all day long but my young, single, childless friends SWEAR that the fun ends at Loop 610. So, you might want to consider that if you value the nightlife and the bar scene.

Personally, if I were you, I would rent a place until you figure out what you want and where you want to live. Good luck!!!

M.D. Anderson has a good reputation as a facilty. I'm not sure about their nurses as I don't know anyone that works there.

My advice for a December grad is to start looking for jobs in August/September. What kind of nursing are you interested in? I have a lot of advice depending on what route you want to go :)

Thanks, Labcat! I am interested in Heme/Onc BMT - preferably adults, but I like PEDS too. I have never been to Houston, so I don't know the first thing about the city. All I know is that I will go wherever the best offer is... I am amneable to any location throughout the US as long as it doesn't snow ~ Ha! Have any recommendations re: this type of nursing in Texas? Thanks in advance
