New Trinity Mother Francis NICU

U.S.A. Texas

Specializes in CDI Supervisor; Formerly NICU.

A friend emailed me a day or so ago, and told me they'd opened the NICU at TMF in Tyler.

I'm a semester from graduating, living in South Texas but from East Texas (and missing it), and interested in NICU, so this is exciting news to me.

Does anyone know if they offer any internships in the new NICU, or if they are hiring GNs for it? I reckon there were probably a lot of nurses at TMF already that wanted to work in the NICU, but is the market saturated there for neonatal nurses?

Appreciate any info you have!

The NICU at Mother Frances will be offering a residency program, but not for the December 2008 graduating class, and possibly not the spring 2009. They are trying to build up the new staff before bringing on more new blood, but the opportunities will be there. There are many other ways to get into the NICU. Any maternal child area would be a great place to gain experience to make you a better candidate, and also critical care experience would help. The critical care residency at Mother Frances is top notch and is taught by a board member for AACN- Julie Miller. She is an amazing teaching and the program has been nationally recognized by AACN. It would be a great place to gain experience and begin your nursing career if you are interested in critical care.

My wife and I traveled back home to East Texas for Thanksgiving, and went to TMF hoping to speak with the nurse manager or someone in charge of that area. While we didn't get to peek into the NICU, and while the management was off work due to the holiday, we were given a name and phone number for a contact (thanks to the ladies in L&D, who were very helpful and encouraging).

It's my understanding that TMF no longer staffs a well-baby nursery...only a small transitional area for the babies too sick to room in with mom and not sick enough for nicu.

Thanks for your very helpful information, also!
