New Texas required CEUs

U.S.A. Texas

The april Texas BON bulletin outlines new changes to required CEUs for license renewal. Maybe it hasnt sunk in yet but the 2 hour Jurisprudence/Ethics CEU every 3rd cycle is something that seems new. Texas, in the past, has had some one time CEU requirements like forensics for ED nurses and bioterroism for all but now you will have to keep up forever with where you are in number of cycles. There do not appear to be any free CEUs on the BON website. There is a page that lists the approved providers at around $50 per course.

I know Florida seems to have requirements close to this along with access to CE Broker program which appears to track and remind you where you are at. Does anyone know of a similar program in Texas? Am I mistaken in that this type of requirement is new for Texas?

This also includes the change to required every certification for geriatrics (and no your annual hospital course wont qualify unless they award CEs for it) CE for those of us in older adult care.

Hey ! I just found out there's an App for that on iphone to track CEUs.. so that's one answer. I dont know if anyone has had any experience using these apps or recommends one..

tried an app called CE Vault which is free but just allows entry of completed courses. I would like an app that has set times to remind me where I am at in my renewal cycle (1st? 2nd?) . I would also like one that can upload camera phone shots of documenation and scanning with barcodes/QS. Probably too much to ask..

I was just audited by the BON, I submitted my proof the same day I got the email. I didn't know about that required CEU. I hope it doesn't affect me.

BON bulletin April 2014 states "each of the above requirements will become effective with renewal cycle that starts jan 1, 2014. " So if you just submitted CEU proof..you were in the midst of a cycle and it should not count.

Thank you! I'm nervous. It's my first time being audited so I wanna make sure I don't do anything wrong.

This seems like it would be cumbersome to keep up with, particularly the ethics and jurisprudence one. It's not that easy to find courses related to these topics, especially free ones (which are my preference >.>) I guess paying for a course once every 6 yrs is okay, but it would just seem like they would have free courses available for something that is a requirement now.

I agree. I brought this up to our system hospital educators and they are now developing a free course for the employees. I predict we will see more " Cyclical CEU" requirements in the future. I notice Florida is well ahead of Texas in this area. So far in Texas it is the RNs responsibility to stay up to date AND TRACK. The state of Florida is using an electronic tracking system called CE Broker to track each nurse's CEUs.
