Moving to Tyler- Have a Few Questions

I'll be moving to Tyler in late August. I'm trying to find an apartment, but almost everyone I call tells me they have a waiting list. Is this because of the college or just normal for there? Which apartments are considered more safe than others? I'll be alone, so don't want to be somewhere that could be unsafe. Also, if I can't find something in Tyler, would Lindale be the next place to look, and if so, which apartments?

Next set of questions. I've taken a job with ETMC. I'll be starting GNO first. This will be my first nursing job. What can I expect with GNO? What should I bring with me? Will they be doing PBDS? I've heard some horror stories about it. Lastly, ETMC is tobacco free. Should I just plan on quitting smoking all together? How is the policy with employees? At my current hospital, employees can still smoke on their own time off campus.

There are LOTS of smokers at ETMC!! So definitely put that worry out of your mind! I loved Tyler and I, too, worked at ETMC although I am not a nurse yet (just been accepted into nursing program though!). I am not sure why you are having problems finding apartments there. I never noticed a huge influx of students. I currently live in College Station and you can definitely tell when the Aggies come back to town!!! If you are going to venture outside Tyler, then Lindale is a nice town. I don't know much about apartments there though. Whitehouse and Chandler are also nice. Go to www.tylerpaper.com and you can view the listings they have there! As far as living in Tyler, there are alot of nice areas. I would say most anything on the south side of town would be good. That area is really booming!

I really loved that area of Texas! The only problem I ever had was finding childcare. I have never seen pregnant women put their unborn children on a waiting list for daycare!!!:chuckle

Thanks so much. I've been looking at the area on Broadway south of the loop. Also, do you know how long it takes from the time you accept a position and do a drug screen to finish the background check?

When you get there, be sure to eat at Mings, on South Broadway. Their jalapeno chicken is the best Chinese dish I've ever had, and they have some of the best hot and sour soup in the country.

Bortaz, I think you have a favorite restaurant in every city!:chuckle I am so disappointed that I have never eaten there!! Hot and sour soup is so yummy!

The area you mentioned should be a good place. I also lived south of the loop. Like I said before I really, really miss it there. As far as the

wait goes, from the point I was chosen for my position to the time I was set up for orientation took about a month. Drug test, background check, etc. was a little time consuming. But maybe for a nurse they will speed things up a little!

Haha, yeah. I've gotten around to a lot of cities in the state over the years. :)

I grew up in Jacksonville, south of Tyler, and lived in Rusk (worked at the prison) before moving here to the RGV. I miss East Texas, badly.

Eating is a necessity. Might as well enjoy it!

Thanks so much. I'm not supposed to start until close to end of August. But starting to reconsider, I think I might have gotten low balled on the pay. I don't think I'll be able to afford to live there on the salary since I'm single. It seems like the cost of living is higher there than the DFW area and the pay lower.

LOL, that is the truth. I grew up in Tyler and moved away to Plano/Allen when I got married. I moved back after 9 yrs to oversee my mother's estate being sold and go back to school and when I graduate I will more than likely move back to Plano/Frisco area. Like you said it actually cost as much if not more to live in Tyler and the pay is around 10-12K a year less???go figure. I'll have to move back just to afford to pay on my student loans.

Thanks. I'm trying to scramble and find some other jobs to apply for in another area. I took out student loans for school, so I have to plan on starting to pay those back soon. Guess I didn't look before I leapt. Live and learn.

Wow! I didn't realize the pay for nurses was that extreme from Tyler to DFW. Although, thinking back I do remember some of my classmates spouses driving to DFW and working Friday, Sat, and Sunday and then returning back to Tyler. That is a little disappointing to hear!:cry: I am about to start NS in a little over 3 weeks:yeah::yeah:! I guess once I get finished, I will really have to do research before I accept a position somewhere. Wow! That just really blows me away! So, do we all have to move to the bigger cities to get nice pay?

:(Unfortunately, unless the Tyler area wakes up and starts offering a little more pay/benefits like the rest of the world we may all have to. For every dollar you are offered it is worth $2080 a year before any OT. This is how they estimate salary (i.e. $19.75 hr = $41080.00 and $25.00 hr = $52000). BTW as of the grads in fall 2007 that worked w/us they had offered the $19.75hr, nonspecialty.

On another note, are you starting in Tyler in 3 weeks? Just curious if you were a classmate.

That is disappointing to hear. No, I won't be in your class. We moved from the Tyler area about a year ago and now live closer to my husbands family in Bryan/College Station. I have been accepted to the nursing program at Blinn. I did complete all my pre-req's at TJC though.
