My experience with the TEAS V

Nursing Students TEAS

Published

I did not study at all for it. I bought the ATI manual book for $110. The amount of times I opened the book I can count on one hand. My coworker lent me a different book, where I practiced a few times but in general didn't really open it. From August until the date I took the test (October 16th), I stressed about passing the TEAS, oddly enough that stress wasn't significant enough for me to study. I guess I kind knew what kind of material I'm up against. However, I always try and practice "never underestimate your enemy."

So my test center was in the Bronx at Monroe College. I arrived 15 minutes late because there is always traffic on the highways leading there. It was all cool though, they put me into the test room with no problem.

Math Part (My score for this section: 73.3%)

The test was done on the computer through ATI's website. There were about 34 questions in the Math section. Ranging from word problems, some algebra questions like foiling, multiplication+division+addition+subtraction of fractions and mixed fractions, measurement problems, and data interpretation. It was all fair problems, nothing too bad. I recommend for this section, answer all the questions you can do easily, and save the longer problem solving questions for the end. I ran out of time for the last 4 questions.

Reading (My score for this section: 81.0%)

This part was fairly easy. If you've taken the SATS and did decent on them, you shouldn't really have a problem with this section. However if English is not your primary language, you might want to brush up on a few things. Basically learn to comprehend what stories/passages are trying to tell you. Difference between theme and main idea.

English and language usage (my score for this section: 53.3%)

Obviously this was my worst section. This was also the last section of the test, so I was basically just not giving a hoot and rushed through it. I'll explain why I rushed through it as there was another reason. This part was a bit tricky, I would definitely recommend brushing up on your grammar and punctuation. They asked questions like:

Which one of these choices is correct?

A) Daryl with his crossbow, killed a walker, that almost, bit Rick.

B) Daryl with his crossbow, killed a walker that almost bit Rick.

C) Daryl, with his crossbow, killed a Walker that almost bit Rick.

D) Daryl, with his crossbow, killed a Walker, that almost bit Rick.

They'll sometimes add semi-colons, commas, rearrange the sentence structure, use different words, or put two almost identical sounding choices that both sound correct. It's up to you to find out which one is the right choice.

Science (my score for this section: 79.2%):

From most content to least content for my exam.. These were the types of science fields covered. The number in parenthesis indicates how many questions were asked of that field.

Life Science (15) > Earth and Physical Science (14)> Human Body Science (11) > Scientific Reasoning (8). If you have a good bio/chem background this should be fairly easy. I would focus more on the anatomy & physiological area, scientific reasoning such as experiment procedures, creating hypothesis etc..

So about the thing that made me rush through the last part of the exam. At precisely around 11AM, 2 hours into the exam... ATI's infrastructure collapsed and we were not able to take the test for a good hour. We literally sat in the testing room, one girl even had Netflix running on the computer until the test instructor came in and told her to not do that. So we had a one hour break technically where we all just sat around and talked. We were offered a make up exam, where we would continue where we left off. However we just stuck it through, and eventually ATI's website worked again. We continued where we left off, with no time taken off because of ATI's fault. Just a heads up, this might happen to you but unlikely.

Anyway, I'm pretty satisfied with my score considering I did not study for this exam (i don't recommend this, please do study. I was lucky, and every test is different). ATI's manual is a bit pricey, but I can see how people can benefit from it. Although I don't justify the price of the book and the test material (at best it's a watered down SAT Exam with science added).

Good luck to all who will be taking this in the future. Prepare for it, but I don't think it should be stress inducing as people make it out to be. It's not difficult, but it will challenge your general knowledge of the four fields. Every individual is different, so prep accordingly. Last words: JUST FOCUS ON YOUR WEAKEST AREAS.
