Choosing MSN program

Hello All! So, I'm a relatively new BSN graduate working in an ICU in the Midwest. I am planning on applying to either a MSN or DNP program (leaning towards family nurse practitioner either way) within a year or two, and I have a few questions that I'm having trouble with...

1.) Some of the programs I'm considering vary in length. For example, the MSN FNP program at UTHealth (Houston Health Science Center) is 41 credits over 4 semesters. However, the MSN FNP program at UNMC in Omaha is 48 credits over 3 years. Any advice on the typical MSN program length? I am having a hard time figuring out why UT's program is seemingly much shorter than others, while it appears to have good rankings from what I've read... (or just any advice on judging the caliber/strength of a program in general would be appreciated!)

2.) Any personal/professional advice on choosing to go the MSN rather than DNP route? Obviously, my goal is to become the very best provider I can be, and I feel that the MSN route would prepare me well to be a NP (and I would always have the option to complete a DNP in the future). I am currently debt-free and saving up to be able to afford grad school without loans.

I enjoy education and learning, and I'm looking forward to growing as a professional nurse... just trying to decide which route to take from here! Thank you!
