Yikes! Violence?

Specialties Psychiatric

Published

Hello everyone,

This is my first post here, so please be gentle.

I am really interested in nursing, particularly psych nursing. I know that I can do it, and do it well. But....then I read things like this (in my area).

http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/news/port-coquitlam-forensic-psychiatric-hospital/

It is really intimidating! I have three children, I can't risk getting stabbed at work and possibly killed? Thoughts? Experiences? Am I being naive thinking it's OK for me to go into psych nursing? Is this type of thing the norm? Is psych nursing dangerous?

Thank you!

I'm so glad that people are still posting on this thread. I have been reading and reading (and worrying) every night in bed, particularly about the forensic hospital in the link I posted because it is so near me. I'm trying to convince myself that it will be OK, this is something that I really want to do. All I find on the internet is articles about how violent it is there, and the type of patients there (a lot of murderers). I did get the chance to speak to someone who works there, and he didn't think it's a big deal and encouraged me to just go for it.

I have worked in psych 12 years now and have never been injured (knock on wood). At most, I have been screamed at and pushed. IMO RNs on medical floors are more at risk from their delirium patients. I can usually reason with a psychotic and paranoid person, but I cannot reason with someone who is delirious. I also have medications already prescribed and at my disposal. The key is to medicate at the first signs of escalation.

If you're interested, give it a try. I've been doing it for 3 years and love it. You will learn to recognize when patients are escalating and how to bring them down. A good rappor with your staff is essential, as mine have actually prevented me from being attacked a couple of times. It's so rewarding to watch patients who are paranoid, delusional, agitated, suicidal etc. become clearer, calmer and stable with your help.
