Lasc spring 2017 Applicants

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi all,

Los Angeles Southwest Spring 2017 cohort was recently chosen from the lottery. I got chosen as an alternative #8. I'm kinda bummed an wanted to know if any of you was an alternative and got in with a similar or higher number. My gpa is 3.5 and my teas 6 score was a 76. I called the school and the assistant told me there are a total of 30 something alternatives which seems a bit excessive. This was the only program I applied to not a good idea I know but is it worth going to the mandatory orientation?

Hello,

I was also selected as an alternative. My alternative number was lower than yours and my gpa is 3.7 and I scored 73% on the teas.I personally will not be attending the mandatory orientation because I called and was told that we must purchase uniform and a nursing tote although we are alternatives. Not only that there are a list of items that must be done and purchased through castle branch

Rose9,

Did you apply at any other programs? And I think it's strange that they are holding the alternatives to the same financial obligations as the accepted students only to find out they didn't get in.

I did.I had applied for LBCC and El Camino. I think it's strange as well not only that the NCLEX pass rate is not that high compared to other nursing programs.im not a huge fan of their campus either.:down:We also don't know what classes we would be taking the first semester. If I don't get into El Camino I am just going to continue applying to other nursing programs.

@ddove1 did you end up getting in for the spring semester? I got chosen for #8 alternate for the fall and I'm just trying to see what my chances are

Ironically, I did get into the program, there were a few alternates #4,5,6,7 who didn't show up.. I'm assuming they got into a different program. Only 4 spots opened up and my number was now four.. so the office rep came into the room with envelopes of the students who got in and I was one of them.. but the cohort before me, Fall 16, accepted 14 of the alternates.. the good thing about the school is that they accept the alternates (the ones who didn't make in this round) the next semester if you didn't make it in for spring. Good Luck

Thanks for the info! Did you have to show up early for the orientation? At the application orientation they said something about trying to be first on the sign-in sheet??

I wasn't the first one there. Showing up early will allow you a seat because it was over 60 people in the room that day and some of them were standing up. The first two people to get there receives a gift .. I think it was a lasc patch of some sort. But it doesn't help you get in the program it's really a lottery but I think you have a good chance of making it in because the fall isn't as impacted as the spring.. additionally they choose about 30 alternates as a back up so top 10 has a good chance of making it in.. it's really nerve wracking waiting for the results.. they dont tell you right away .. we didn't find out until 1-2 hours later after the orientation began if we made it in.

Thank you so much for the info! I really appreciate it!! Hope you are liking the program so far!

No worries, I hope you get in the program.. you know the program by far has been the most difficult schooling I have been in. I have a BS in Biochem and Ms in Bus mgmnt, and it's so different I went in the school with a 3.7 and 88 on my teas and I'm doing okay but it's so different. The exams are critical thinking and for example some of the questions may have all 4 correct answers but which one is more correct or priority. There are a bunch of select all that apply that makes it difficult too. But once you learn how to take those kind of exams you will be fine.. the grading scale is a fun 100 - 93 is an A, 92 - 83 is a B, 82 -76 is a C and 75 and below is a Fail. So you really have to bring ur A game to do well. When is the orientation? If you get into the program lmk because I can help you out a bit and give you study tips to help you succeed with the professors, and you come up with your own style but just some tips to help.

The orientation is may 16th so I will definitely let you know if I get in! Thank you for all the helpful info! I got a 4.0 In my sciences and 85 on my teas. The one thing that I will need to adjust to is the testing style, ESPECIALLY the select all that apply!! Is there anything you did over winter to prepare that has helped you so far?

I didn't go to the boot camp because it wasn't mandatory for the program but I would suggest you to to take it because it's an intro to the upcoming subjects/work and all my fellow cohort was so prepared and very knowledgeable about the topic.. I had to play catch up big time.. the crazy thing is that the pre-reqs is they doesn't really prepare like the boot camp will.. because your not using body parts and how they function (pre reqs's) per se, it's how diseases affect your body so your learning meds and process and functions and safety and priorities and symptoms and signs and treatments. It's so much critical thinking because now you have to apply everything you've learned and apply it to a patient. They don't teach you critical thinking but they test you on it if you get my drift.. there's books out there to help you succeed.. you will do well though.. Good job on the 4.0 make sure you try to shoot for that with everything you do..
