Can anyone recommend a PhD in Nursing program with minimal on campus time? The ideal program would have intensive on campus time once or twice a year at the most with most classes being offered online. I don't really want a completely online format though.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) has a PhD program that meets once a year--a week in July. They call it "distance accessible". I have class mates who live several states away. You can work out to do research practicum hours close to you (assuming you live close to a university or hospital with an active research program). The nature of the Phd makes the training easy to do online. You will need to have a research interest that coincides with a researcher at UAB. For CRNA's there are several faculty with possible matches. Currently, they offer in-state tuition for the online nursing programs.

Did you find a program that you like yet? Do you have a specific area you would like to focus on for the PhD? I am currently working with a PhD student who is in the military through UVA, but one of our deans is a CRNA, PhD and she had some ideas.

The USAF has decided I will be going to USUHS. It is a good program with plenty of connections to NIH, other universities, and research institutes also.

My initial plan is to study PTSD in a mouse model looking at the differences in their brains using brain imaging of normal versus PTSD mice when exposed to different anesthetic agents. It still needs lots of work to finalize the exact details, but that is the basic premise at this time.
