My love for financial aid offices...

Nursing Students Post Graduate

It doesn't exist. Not for any of them. I was accepted into this one graduate midwifery program which I am eager to attend last Nov/Dec. I am still waiting on an award letter. I have been told that I would receive something in April. When April came and went I was informed that I the nurse- midwifery progam "hasn't been packaged yet". and that they "have no idea when they will be packaging it." Considering I may have to move, change school for my kids etc etc to do this, I don't think that it's out of line to have expected it by now. Or at least have been given an timeline. I emailed the program director about this but haven't heard back just yet. I actually do have some other incredible options, but this is my first choice.

I've been waiting 9 years to do this, and I guess I am just a little tired of waiting.

Can't apply for the grad plus loan until you have maxed out your stafford. Can't max out your Stafford without an official award letter and acceptance of the package.

Same thing happened when I was awaiting my package for my BSN program. Is it just me, or are the financial aid offices like this everywhere?

Just needed to vent. Thanks for reading.

I can understand your frustration! :banghead:

My experience with financial aid is also a hurry up only to wait deal. I even went to a different school because the initial one I was checking in to had a very pitiful FA dept. I was going back to school after 20 years and I was not wanting the runaround. I found a financial aid director at the school I did end up starting at who helped me immensely! She was then the only one I would deal with when I had an issue as she could best explain to me why things happened the way they did and what I needed to do about it.

I'm sorry you seem like you are getting the runaround...I do commend you for your ambition to further your education! Take care! :heartbeat

I'm sorry you're having those problems. I feel a bit better, however, if these problems are more universal. I thought it was just my school! Can you go there in person and get everything in writing before you make a committment to attend?

The financial aid office at my school hemmed and hawed for weeks about my aid package after I was accepted. After I moved to attend the school they informed me I was not eligible for most of my aid. I did not qualify for private loans. My only option, other than be empty handed and have to wait another year & reapply all over again everywhere else I was accepted, &c was to attend part time. Now my award for this next academic year is even LESS than last year's, in spite of the fact that I have less income on my last year's IRS, of course, because I was in school. On top of all this, I just won a prestigous scholarship from an outside agency. I can't afford to continue this BS with this school. What kills me, is I actually want to be a real midwife -- I'm not here for finishing school.

(fun with smileys!)

Oh man Anon Nurse! Just another struggle to add to the list of issues that have plagued you at this place! I'm sorry it isn't working out! I agree that you should have gotten what you needed by now, and if not, at least an actual answer/explanation of what to expect and *when*...I hope you find a school that respects you and your experiences!

UNBELIEVABLE, Anon nurse. I don't blame you for transfering. That is totally unacceptable. I have a really hard time with that sort of lack of simple respect for another human being. You are absolutely better off elsewhere. I am so sorry that has happened to you ((((()))).

i think we go to the same school!

my motto is: those people in that office should be fired! i warn everyone coming to my school that fa ppl should be fired. i told the new class to get independent loans for school that go straight to their bank account, not the school. do not let the school touch your money! pay the higher interest rate and you control it.

what independent loans are those? you can also apply for scholarships that are paid directly to you.

we must be honest and direct and accountable with the public and coworkers as health care professionals. i expect no less from others, like fa people and faculty; my future is on the line with them. i am making a huge financial investment, money i will be paying for these loans, to be at their school. they are there to accomodate me. they are not paying me to be there, they will not payback my loans, i am paying them. schools are a business like anything else. they provide a service for a fee, in this case, education and eligibility to sit boards, promise of good recommendations after graduation, in exchange for my money and hard work to complete the requirements. then you will try to recruit good nurses you work with to apply to your alma mater and will promote it in the real world. i suppose this has been my problem, expecting the same honesty, accountability, and no-bs from school that i am at work and my real life.

i think fa and school administrators are hired from the same applicant pool hospitals hire hr people and administrators and management.

i would also suggest to those applying to school to go ahead and apply for the nhsc. with the nhsc, you may have to move for a job, but if you can demonstrate need for your services in your community -- ie, presence of a medically underserved population, you can get funding to provide those services. but nhsc only pays for certain specialities. also, check with your state's dept of public health. many will reimburse you for loans if you practice in an underserved area, but you may have to attend a school in that state to qualify.
