Hi all,

I'm looking for some advice because I'm torn with what to do in the next step in my career. I'm currently a pediatric ICU nurse and love it. I want to return to school this summer/fall to be a nurse practitioner. My options are as follows:

NYU PNP part time while I work full time, 3 years and get a MSN.

OR: Rutgers Newark PNP (or FNP, not sure) full time, 3 years, get a DNP.

NYU is a higher ranked school, but I have to work full time to afford it, so it would take the same amount of time, and I'd only have a MSN. Rutgers I can afford (in state) to go full time, and I'd graduate in the same 3 years with a DNP. Issue -- Rutgers is not as highly a ranked program.

I'm inclined to go for the gold and get the DNP, but am worried Rutgers program is not as good as NYU and job prospects will be different. (Although I'll have a DNP vs. MSN, so....?) Is DNP vs. MSN so much more important than school rank that i'll be in a different job category?

SO: does anyone know about rutgers' BSN-DNP program, where its graduates are getting jobs, if they're having a hard time finding jobs, and if they like the program/think it's a good education?

FYI: My goal is to be a primary care NP in a pediatric clinic, maybe open my own practice someday.

TIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your jobs prospects will not be any different. This isn't like law school where ranks truly matter. Both are solid programs. As long as you're not getting a degree from University of Phoenix or something, you'll be fine either way. Go with the cheaper/more comfortable option

Choose the school you are most comfortable with. You want to spend 3 years of life loving the experience, not hating it.

I'm just curious, which did you choose?

I am currently in the BSN program at rutgers and plan on doing the DNP program at rutgers in the future. I am also interested in pediatrics.
