Direct Entry Psych MH NP programs

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Hi, I have been reading and researching for a while. I am interested in going back to school to become a PsychMH NP. I would really prefer a direct entry program as I already have a masters degree in counseling and a license as an LPC, so far I have found.

Vanderbilt University

Seattle University

Boston College

University of Pennslyvania

Can anyone provide some other suggestions for schools that have direct entry PsychMH NP programs. Thanks in advance.

Seattle U. wanted me to take ALL of the prerequisites over because it's been more than 10 years. I'm sorry, if I get an A after re-taking Anatomy, Physiology, Developmental Psych, Microbiology, and Organic Chemistry... you have the gall to tell me that I need to go back and take Bio 101? I think not. My bachelor's degree just didn't expire after 10 years!

That is pretty standard.....about the science pre-reqs. I've usually seen them accepted for only 5 or 7 years though. Things change so fast with research -

Specializes in Critical Care, Progressive Care.
Don't go to Yale

Please explain. Did you have a substandard experience at Yale or do you simply not like the color blue?

Sorry--I was just being cranky about the prereqs. I've heard that the UW direct entry program is just about to go to a doctorate only...

Not to worry - I get cranky too sometimes. That said, if you were looking at Yale and did the now "optional" prereqs I wouldn't get to cranky, the can only help you and wasn't Anatomy fun?

With respect to UW - you may want to email them and ask. I looked at the website and got the sense that only FNP was going to a doctorate.

I'm doing the MEPN Psych for UW right now. So far it is only the FNP for the doctorate but I do belive next year the Psych will be added to the doctorate. Nevertheless, I believe the Psych track will still be available for the MEPN as well.

That's great to hear. I'm really interested in their acute care track.

How was the UW interview process? I know they do group interviews. What kinds of questions did they ask?

The Whole interview process was pretty bad! It was a 2 hour long interview. I had a second individual interview after the group one. I dont know if the acute care track has a second interview in addition to the group interview. The questions vary each year according to the cohort before mine. They always ask a senario question however. If your in Seattle I would definitely recommend going to an info session.

I can tell you right now, that four weeks into the quarter has been extremely stressful. A lot of my classmates are on edge and some days I don't know what I got myself into! If you have any specific questions feel free to PM. It might take kind of long for a response but I will definitely get back to you.
