Working at a new pedi er... HELP

Specialties Pediatric

I'm an RN with 2 yrs exp as a level one trauma pedi er in a very low income part of the country for an old and established hospital... Ive recently moved to the exact opposite, a nice area where everyone has primary care in a new pedi er. I can't believe what I'm seeing here....

The nurses I've orientated under dont know of or care for safe doses, never double checking their own meds. They don't know of the safe amount and locations for IM injections in the pedi population, they dont even know basics like order of VS in a pedi pt!!!! Theyre all great er nurses, who've "made the jump to peds" as they've opened up the pedi section... but with no real additional peds education. Ive seen some unsafe practices, things that wouldve resulted in a risk management meeting at my old facility.... and I don't know what to do! I'm way too new to address these things, I'm still on orientation, but I almost want to start precepting the nurses who are precepting me!!! How long should I stay here before attempting to be proactive and making the necessary changes? If I'm not here long, they might think I'm just a new nurse who thinks I know more than they do, I want to approach this from a 'one of the team' perspective, what would you do? Leave and cut your losses or stay and help?

You need to politely bring your concerns to you manager and your educator. The practices you've described are not safe, nor are they common practice in other peds EDs.

For the sake of the child, change needs to happen soon! Please find it in yourself to be that advocate of change.
