Is pediatric a hard/competitive specialty to get into as a new grad nurse?

Specialties Pediatric

Published

I am a pre-nursing student and I have long wanted to be a pediatric nurse...recently I've been thinking ICU or ER because they are do in demand but I honestly think that pediatrics would fot me better...like PICU.

I was wondering if it's a very hard area of nursing to get into? If it's hard to get the job?

I will be going for my Bachelors...not sure if I'm doing straight BSN or the ADN-BSN route but we'll see :o

Anyway, any advice and perspectives on the field and what is it like?

Pediatrics is a very popular specialty -- but that is no reason to not head in that direction if that is where your interest lies. I suggest you get as much experience working with children as you can while going to nursing school in order to help your chances of being hired into pediatrics when you graduate. Experience working with kids will also help you to decide/confirm that pediatrics is a specialty you would enjoy.
