Nursing Student Looking For Hospital CNA/PCA/PCT Position And Struggling

Nursing Students Technicians

Published

Background: I'm a nursing student going for my BSN. I'm a week and half (YAY) away from completing my second clinical (first med-surg). I currently work at a fitness center, but pretty minimal hours, and it's somewhere I'd like to get away from.

So, I've been applying like crazy to all five hospitals in town. For pretty much every position I can do. I can't work full time (I would like to keep a bit of my sanity =P), but I'm willing to work evenings, nights, weekends, whatever. I'd just like to get my foot in the door at a hospital and get some more experience.

I've only received one call about my applications. And, I totally floundered on the phone call and ended up getting the rejection email a day or two later. :(

I don't have my CNA, but profs have stated that the clinical experience we get should be equivalent. Has anyone ever gotten a job just based off their experience? Or have you done the whole CNA-challenge bothersome steps? Would it be worth it to invest a few hundred to have the certification, or is my schooling enough?

Also, any tips of ways to get my applications to maybe shine a bit more and give me a better chance would be appreciated! Thank you for your time and help!

(Mods, this is my first thread, so I hope it's in the right place and everything! =) )

I can relate. I just completed my first year in a 2 year RN program AND have a CNA license. I have applied, literally, to over 100 PCT/CNA positions at hospitals within an hour of me and haven't gotten a single call. For my summer off, I agreed to do an unpaid student nurse internship (basically fulfilling a PCT role) at a hospital for 10 weeks, 24 hours a week. Yes, the fact that it's unpaid stinks. On the other hand, I'm getting great experience AND my nurse manager likes me and offered me a paid position in 6 weeks, when the internship is complete.

Point being: The job market is bad right now. Shoot for exactly what you want and work for it, but take what you can get when you can get it.

I just got hired as a PCA without a CNA license. During my interview, they brought up how I had done the hospital's volunteer program. This was probably my highest selling point because it showed that I already had "experience" doing it their way. (By the way, I am a 3rd semester student.)

If you hear a distant swishing like a baseball bat striking out, that's me. But I'm happy as long as I can survive. When they ask for charity work, since charities pay minimum wage often, I feel like that is every job I've had in school. In a addition, I help wandering souls, young and old, focus on essential goals in live. Well, that and $3 will buy me a cup of coffee though...swish, swish, swish...

Hey everyone :)

Wow, I am so glad I just found this forum. I am in the same boat. I currently am an MA with 10 years experience. Also worked in the ER for 2 years as a ER tech. Was a CNA about 11 years ago, but went up to MA and obviously didn't keep my CNA cert.

So far, bad luck also. I've been told at least 2 -3 times already "You need to be a CNA currently". Its like your punished or not as beneficial because you have MORE experience. I am willing to take the pay cut obviously or I would be applying. :uhoh3:

It's getting back on the floors I'm interested in. I don't know how to redo the resume to reflect stronger "aide" skills I guess. IDK. Just so nervous how I am going to do this for the next year in LPN school since I'm losing some decent pay as an MA.

Frustrated in St. Louis,
