Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Due to the lack of accurate information regarding the RN program at Hostos, I decided to post a thread. The RN program at Hostos is competitive, but doable. Hostos offers admission to the nursing program for both fall and spring semesters. The fall semester begins in late August, and classes are scheduled early in the morning. Lecture, lab, and clinicals are spread throughout the weekday (Monday through Thursday). The spring semester starts in February, and nursing classes are scheduled during the evenings, which are also Monday through Thursday. Clinicals for the spring semester however, are held during the weekends and during the day. Before you can apply to the program, you have to have completed the prerequisite course work first. The perquisite courses include the following:

*Anatomy and Physiology I & II.

*Microbiology

*Chemistry

*Math for Allied a Health Sciences

*Expository Writing (English 100)

Literature and Composition (English 200)

Introduction to Sociology

Introduction to Psychology

Human Development

Nutrition

Courses marked with an asterisk must have a minimum grade of B minus. All others must have a grade of atleast a C. You are only allowed to repeat one prerequisite course if you should fail (or receive a grade lower than the minimum requirements). If you fail two or more courses, or don't meet the mimum grade requirements, you are no longer eligible for admission into the program (yikes). Additionally, the science courses must have been completed within the last five years of admission to the school, no exceptions.

Criteria for admission into the nursing programs consists of the following:

1. Completion of prerequisite coursework

2. Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA

3. NLN score of 99 (which is half, or in the 50th percentile)

4. ATI TEAS program rank of atleast 35

Once you have finished the prerequisite coursework, you are required to take the NLN exam. It is offered at Hostos, but you can take it elsewhere throughout the year. Just make sure you send the nursing committee your score. You need a minimum score of 99, which is based out of 200 (so about half). A score of 99 and a score of 180 are treated the same. They are viewed as just passing. If you do not score atleast a 99 on the NLN, you are allowed to repeat it just once after the passage of one calendar year. If in your second attempt you do not meet the requirements, you are no longer eligible for admission into the RN program at Hostos.

After the NLN, you will be invited to take the TEAS exam, though you can also take it elsewhere (just make sure they receive your score). It is imperative that you do well on the ATI TEAS exam. Every semester, 30 students are selected for the program based on their ATI TEAS program rank. All eligible applicants are ranked from highest to lowest based on their ATI TEAS program score. The committee selects the top 30 students. If two or more students should have the same TEAS program rank, then admission will be based on their composite GPA. The composite GPA is calculated by averaging the cumulative GPA and the GPA in the following courses: anatomy and physiology I & II, chemistry, math for allied health sciences, and expository writing (English 100) and literature and composition (English 200). The student with the highest composite GPA will be granted admission. If space permits, the other student with the same rank will be granted admission (given that there are no others with the same rank).

Admitted to the nursing program for the fall semester with the following:

Cumulative GPA : 3.93

Composite GPA : 3.86

NLN score : 129 (85th percentile)

ATI TEAS program rank: 71

Best of luck

P.S. Hey Tanya ;)

Hi Alex great job at detailing the whole admission process ! It was challenging but we did it !

Thank you very much for this details. Although the post is 2 years old, I found it very helpful. I am in the process of becoming a pre-nursing student. I have a lot of second thoughts of going to a community college instead of a private but this post was definitely helpful on what expect from the admissions process.

I like a challenge, I think it makes us much better as individuals.
