Oncology Nursing

Specialties Oncology

I am a nursing student who is interested in doing full time ICU work, but I am also interested in doing part time work on an oncology floor. I love surgical patients, and would like to work in surgical/trauma ICU, so I would love to work on a medical/surgical oncology floor if at all possible. A few of my family members have had cancer, and I've treated a limited number of oncology patients, but I haven't been to a specialized oncology floor for clinical. My main question is this: what kinds of things do you do, and what is a typical day like for you? Do a lot of your patients have central lines? Do you do telemetry monitoring on the oncology floor? Are you satisfied with your job? How much training did you have to do once you got to the floor? I know that the hospitals in my area will hire new graduates in both the ICU and the oncology floors, and I am really excited about the prospect of working on both units. Thanks for answering my questions!
