I got a job today!

Hey everyone,

Today I had my first nursing job interview (graduating in December). I was applying for a med/surg floor, and an Oncology floor. I really loved the people on the ONC floor, and was hoping they wanted to hire a new grad!!! This afternoon I got a call offering me both postions!!! I'm calling back tomorrow and accepting the oncology position. I am really excited, now all I have to do is pass my finals and my boards :eek:

I can't believe school is over and I will be out in the real world with no clinical instructor helping me! Any suggestions for a soon to be new grad about to work in Oncology? Thanks everyone!

Congrats!!!! I wanted to ask..are you getting an ADN/BSN? I've been told that they normally do not hire people without having experience in oncology first? I'm presently in the ADN program.

I'm in a AD program; the hospital I'll be working at varies when hiring new grads; I just got lucky!!!

I wanted to congratulate you on your job!! I was a new grad last May and started on a Oncology/Hematology right out of school. My first suggestion to you is join ONS (Oncology Nursing Society- http://www.ons.org ) you will get loads of information from them and a few great cancer nursing journals. If you do decide to join please use my name as your referrer, Jennifer Peters.

Big stuff to know in Onc nursing is management of side effects related to treatments, Nausea, Pain, radiation side effects, fatigue, infection, and don't forget coping and grieving.

I wish you good luck, it is a very rewarding part of nursing!!
