Hey all. Although I work in adolescent acute care pediatrics, I am considering a move to the oncology unit. I was interested in what a coworker told me about, a standard treatment for female cervical, lady partsl, and ovarian cancers - Cesium Implant. What is this exactly?

Specializes in Gyn Onc, OB, L&D, HH/Hospice/Palliative.

Used for cervical cancer, the implants are temporary. usually the patient goes to the OR to have 'fletcher suits' placed, rods that stay in place during the treatment. Pt comes back from OR, rad therapy comes up and loads the patient ( with the cesium). The apparatus' stays insitu for 48 hrs or so, until removed. The pt is "hot" during that time, rad precautions are in effect. They must remain on strict bedrest, flat to min elevated

I am a nursing student, and have had this done twice. I am recovering from stage 3 cervical cancer and am now post chemo and radiation and had 2 implants done. If you have any further questions I can answer them from a patients stand point. Grumpyrn did a great job explaining it medically!
