I am moving back to OKC after graduating from an accelerated BSN program in Nebraska. I was curious if anyone has suggestions or recommendations for working at Mercy Hospital? I will be living in Edmond (I-35/Memorial) starting around Sept. 1. I like Med/Surg and almost all areas of nursing, but have had limited experience. Do ER departments hire new grads? Should I start with a Med/Surg unit?,,,I would love to hear from someone working in this area, or who has some good advice on how to decide where to start my nursing career.....Joyfulgal

Mercy is a good hospital and everyone I know who works there really liked it! They are not easy for new grads to get hired into certain specialty units though because so many apply and they do give preference to the students who worked there during nursing school to other new grads.

I know they hire new grads into med/surg units. I worked there as a tech for awhile on the student flex team and liked the nurses I worked with overall, the hospital is clean and well run.

Thank you for your response. Do you think I will have a better shot at finding my way to the ER if I were to work in Med/Surg unit at Mercy for a while? I like Med/Surg and believe it is a good step to take for any new grad; but I know that I will want to go to ER nursing at some point. I took a look at their job postings on-line, and they do have shifts available..what do you think? I appreciate any input at this point. Thanks, Joy

If I were you I would just apply for what you want and also ask to speak to the nurse recruiter and she would know exactly what you should do. They are all really friendly there and could give you a better idea, as a new grad, where they could put you. Mercy's med surg floors are not bad either. Most of the nurses I worked with when I was a student seemed to enjoy their jobs and were not as overworked as some hospitals....most had about 5 maybe 6 patients each....and for med/surg that isn't horrible cause other hospitals I've seen 7-8-9 patients for each nurse!

I have worked at mercy for 5 years now and yes it is a great place to work and yes we are short no matter what our recruiters say... haha. I can only give you one good piece of advise find out where you want to work medsurg, ortho, family birthplace, ect..... and then go there ask for the nurse manager find out her name (I say her only because all of them are females lol) and talk her about yourself. Trust me there is not a floor that is not hurting for nurses right now. hope this helps pm if you have more questions!

I work at the mercy in Ardmore OK.. Been here 12 years, graduated from RN schoold in 2001 and there weren't any openings in the ER at that time. I went ahead and took a position on the m/s unit out of desperation. Don't get me wrong, I love m/s, but it is very very hard to go from a floor nurse to the er. I personally believe that you are better off starting off in the er.
