Another qustion on getting hired - are there jobs?

I keep reading about "the nursing shortage", yet I am reading all over on this site and hearing from my friends who've completed the local nursing program that they are having a hard time finding jobs.

What's with that??! It's kind of misleading, isn't it?

Are there jobs or aren't there? Does it depend on where you are? I'm going to start pre-requisite's for the ASN nursing program this fall at Kent State Ashtabula...will I be able to work afterwards? Or are there jobs but just not at hospitals? Of all the kinds of degrees I could get I really gravitate towards nursing...I really don't want to have to go back for something else later because I couldn't find work. :cry:

Well, let me explain this confusion-because I get this ALL the time from friends and family! If you are an "experienced" nurse-with at least a year under your belt-then, yes there are LOTS of jobs.

BUT, for the new grad who needs orientation-there are very little jobs. People say that nursing is recession proof. Its NOT. Its cut-throat out here in the job market. Some people are getting jobs, some are being released from tuition reimbursement programs, and some that thought that they would have jobs bc they work in hospitals already are being told that they don't have a position for them.

When I started school, they were giving 5000 dollar sign on bonuses. Now, there is nothing out there-I would have never thought of it like this.

Ok I think I understand. Well I guess I'm at a disadvantage then because I am a SAHM and will be a new grad with no experience. Thank you for clearing things up a bit for me. I guess all I can do is cross my fingers and hope for the best then.

I, too, am a SAHM for about 5 1/2 years! No medical exp. and all the places that I have worked in the past are shut down-so no references from work. BUT! I **think** that I might have a job. I should hear something soon. If I do, I will post how I managed to do this with my background. Good luck-there is hope!

From all I can see it depends on the area you are going to. Yes, there are plenty of places all across the US that don't hire anymore, but there are still a few that do...but you have to be willing to relocate.

I am willing to relocate.

I am in CA now and I can't find any job here for new grad RNs.

Are hospitals still hiring new grads?
