What do volunteers typically do in a Women's Care unit?

Hi there!

I'm a pre nursing student right now and I go in for a background check on Friday for a volunteering position on a women's care floor. I'm really excited! I just don't know what to expect. What do volunteers do at your hospital?

I've been both a volunteer on a maternity floor and also as a nurse had volunteers that worked on my OB/GYN unit. As a volunteer, we would get fresh water and/or juice for the patients (after checking with their assigned nurse to make sure the patient could have it) once or twice a shift, run errands (for both the nursing staff and patients), wheel patients out to their car when they were discharged home, deliver flowers, assemble chart packs (charting is now mostly via computer), restock supplies as needed, answer the phone, etc. The facility that you will be working for may have a list of tasks for volunteers. Most likely you will not be providing patient care, even feeding a baby a bottle (it potentially could choke), or helping a patient up out of bed (they could faint and fall). Where do you live? I would love to volunteer at the l&d unit! I will need to go to different hospitals and see if they offer that volunteer position. :)
