Stem cell collection

Hi all!

Got a question about stem cell collection kits...sterile or not? Here's the situation.....last night a co-worker set my delivery table for me. The parents had a collection kit, I believe from a company I hadn't seen before. Anyway, the co-worker told me that the contents were on the table. I didn't think much of this until I read a flyer from the kit that was laying around, stating "Contents of this collection kit are NOT sterile. C-section portion of kit IS sterile". I went to my NM who stated she was unsure of the kits as well and to be safe, set another table, leaving the contents aside.

Dr came in and read me the riot act, stating how much more difficult delivery would be now because she would have to re-glove.....basically, I made more work for her and she was pissed.

She said "the contents were wrapped in plastic right? So they are sterile". Well, just because things are in plastic, doesn't mean they are!!! Sooooo........I'm confused! Any input would be great! Thanks!

It's been a while since I had a patient who had a stem cell collection, but I thought the kits were always sterile so that you could put them on the table. It would make more sense for them to package them that way. I guess you'd have to trust that the label was correct, and that it wasn't sterile. I think you did the right thing, though. Maybe you could use the C/Section set to put on the table, since it's sterile, even when you have a vag delivery. It didn't save you from getting screamed at this time, but maybe next time?...;)

all I have ever used were sterile....
