A Question about GTPAL (Pregnancy Codes).

Specialties Ob/Gyn

Updated:   Published

OK, I am extremely confused of the pregnancy codes that I learnt from class today - GTPAL (gravida, term, pre-term or parity, abortion, and live).

For example, G2P1 means the woman is currently pregnant and she has a living child. G4T1P1A1L1 means the woman is now pregnant; had one TA; had one stillbirth @ week 34; had one child died @ 6 months of age. Another one is G3T1P0A1L1 is the woman is having her third prenancy; has one living child born in term and she had one abortion.

I needed some help here. So when do I know if the P is for pre-term OR parity? In addition, would someone care to explain the examples that I provided above?

Thank you in advance!!

G9 (2 losses, 2 twin pregnancies, 5 term pregnancies = total 9 pregnancies)

T5 (pregnancies carried to term)

P2 (the twin pregnancies -remember you are counting pregnancies, not the number of babies resulting from them)

A2 (losses)

L9

This. The ONLY place that multiples are recorded as such is under the L of TPAL. It's usually still self-explanatory, unless a woman has more than one set of multiples, then you have to start asking more detailed questions.

I disagree with Elvish's description of P in GTPAL. Twin pregnancies would count as 2 babies, not one. So the mother would be: G9T5P4A2L9.

Respectfully, that is incorrect. When you're using GTPAL (rather than just G P) the twin pregnancy is ONLY reflected in the L. The G, T, P, and A are "pregnancy events," not number of children.

So how would you describe a woman with 9 pregnancies, 1 twin birth with one of the twins stillborn, no preterm, no abortions, and 9 living children?

I just got done working 12 hours. Don't make me think. Sometimes the GTPAL numbers don't explain the whole story by themselves, and you have to provide additional clarification. That's okay.
