If a new BSN grad was interviewed today at your hospital, do you think there would be an opening in l&d?
Would there be an opening in post-partum/newborn?
Please include any info about recent hires for your unit.
Thanks!!

I was hired directly into L&D (LDRP actually) out of school (ADN) in 2003. They hired 2 new grads in May 2003 (myself and a BSN grad who had worked there as a unit secretary). In January 2004 they hired two more- one had done a half-semester senior practicum with us. Last June, three more, all of whom had worked on the unit as aides or LCs. No new grads in January and I don't know what the plan is for this May/June. They had also hired 3 experienced nurses at the time I started (one who did not stay long) and a couple more since to keep the skill level on the unit up and balance out all the newbies :)
They've given all of us new grads a great orientation- everyone orients to mom/baby first, then L&D, then level 2 nursery. L&D especially is 1:1 with an assigned preceptor. I had two since I oriented on nights (with an incredible nurse) then needed some more time, so I went to days with another great preceptor.
