Poll: Are there openings in L&D?

Published

If a new BSN grad was interviewed today at your hospital, do you think there would be an opening in l&d?

Would there be an opening in post-partum/newborn?

Please include any info about recent hires for your unit.

Thanks!!

right at the moment, no openings exist in my unit. But we have hired new grads very recently, right out of school, so yes, it would be very possible to work in our OB unit right after nursing school. good luck to you.

As Deb posted, we have no openings right now. We did hire 2 2004 graduates this year...both with their ADN's and they are doing well.

Good luck!

I'm a new BSN grad, and went right into L&D. I was fortunate enough to receive offers from 3 hospitals, all in LDR- it seems the old "two years of med/surg" standard has fallen to the wayside....

my local hospital as well is hiring new grads in L&D. hopefully i'll be one of them come May!

We do NOT hire new grads into LDRP at all. Our manager has stuck to at least 6 months med-surg.

I don't think it would be too difficult to find a job as a new grad in OB. Most NICUs hire (and even prefer) new grads. Mother-baby is an excellent place for a new grad to start, and some hospitals will take new grads into L&D, depending on their staffing needs.

Just be certain that any hospital you consider will offer you a thorough orientation 1:1 with a preceptor, as well as didactic instruction and the opportunity to obtain the necessary certifications, such as NRP, fetal monitoring, and possibly ACLS.

Yes, beware of things that appear "too good" like major bonuses signing on w/o experience. This would signal a very understaffed unit and is likely to lead to more trouble than it's worth! CAVEAT EMPTOR!

i have rarely seen ads for anyone without l&d experience for l&d positions. i suppose if you apply (not in response to an ad) you have a chance. i've only known a couple of l&d nurses in my day, all of which have had some kind of experience.

come to think of it, i hardly see ads for l&d openings. and i scrutinize every ad of every publication.

My hospital offers fellowships for new grad and new-to-LDR nurses in June and Jan. Definately make sure you will be getting a 1:1 orientation because most of us didn't get a lot of experience with LDR in nursing school (unless you got a senior practicum/preceptorship in nursing school). Good luck!!!

I worked in 1st NICU, then L&D in my last year of my ADN program, and I indeed got a position right out of school in L&D. If you are on the east coast, i can tell you right now that there are indeed openings at my hospital on L&D! Best of luck!

Opportunities also exist down here in Florida.
