As a labor and delivery nurse, how would you feel about being oriented to post partum (which also takes all pediatrics and gynies), nursery (level 1), and labor/ delivery and then being floated randomly to all three areas every time you work?

I wouldn't like it very much... our L&D is closed though mostly that means PP nurses do not come to L&D, but we go there... if Peds/gyn needs a nurse the PP nurse goes there and we(L&D) to to PP.

I dislike going to PP, but sometimes we have to start on PP, go back to L&D and then back to PP... and that poor nurse always gets the worst patients...

It seems like way too much and as I stated in an earlier post L&D can't take care of medical or surgical pts in our facility and then go to L&D....we would be considered dirty and have to shower and change to care for the L&D pt.. and sometimes a STAT section will not wait for that...

That's how our department is. You start in Postpartum (mother/baby) and pediatrics, work those two for about six months, and then train to either L&D or nursery. You are assigned to a position based on the needs of the day.

I don't mind. It mixes things up a bit, adds some variety. I like working all the different areas.
