ferning

I'm looking for feedback regarding whether or not RN's are regularly doing ferning to assess ruptured membranes. If yes, is it under a competency/standardized procedure?

Thanks!!

Hi

No, our nurses do not do ferning to check for ruptured membranes.

I work in a teaching hospital so the med students and residents do the ferning. That is not to say that the nurses do not know how, and we have probably taught as many students how to read it as the residents have.

Hope this helps you

Thanks for your info. I am in a rural facility where the RN is the first line for everything! We have done ferning for decades but now the lab says that only DRs and lab tech's can do ferning. I disagree and feel that a RN can do this under a competency and standardized procedure.
