Specialties Ob/Gyn

I am looking into starting my master's degree and have the option for Maternity Clinical Nurse Specialist. Does anyone work with them? What is their job desciption at your hospital. Does anyone have any suggestions for a different avenue?

Specializes in Specializes in L/D, newborn, GYN, LTC, Dialysis.

I have worked with TWO frustrated CNS who basically functioned as RN's on our unit. CNS jobs are few and far between, they cited. One teaches part time at the university in OB nursing. Both have skills they do not use much. Make sure there is a market in the area you choose to practice before jumping in.

The one I know bascially functions as a floor nurse who will take care of the patient with the highest acuity. She does nothing more than any other RN really, but because of her "specialized" training, she takes care of the sicker patients. Not that people really get that sick on OB... but.........
