dialysis staffing

Nurses Safety

Published

do any dialysis nurses out there agree that dialysing patients in a high dependency setting should require that more than 1 dialysis nurse be on the floor throughout the dialysis treatment. i currently work in a 4 bedded HDU in UK and culturally we have been dialysing patients on our own for years with dialysis staff from other units providing the requisite pre dialysis checks then leaving us to dialyse on our own. other larger units within the hospital do not dialyse patients unless there are 2 dialysis nurses on the floor. should i refuse to dialyse until 2 nurses are available regardless of the urgent need for dialysis? management are shrugging their shoulders and say that because there are not enough trained dialysis staff within the unit then there is nothing they can do to help and we should just get on with it. is this safe practice?any thoughts appreciated.
