Best degree to get into Nursing Informatics?

Specialties Informatics

Hi everyone!

I am interested in eventually going into nursing informatics. What is the best course of study (master's degree? in what?) to do so?

To start out, I am becoming a super user at my facility's EMR system, so that's my first step, but what should I plan on doing for my future, education and experience-wise?

Thank you so much!

Becoming a super user and getting experience in informatics is definitely the step in the right direction.

Many have started as superusers and then they have gone on to gets jobs in informatics.

However, others have gone straight for a master's degree in nursing informatics and then they got a job in the field.

Thus, it is possible to get in the field either way, but the choice really comes down to the person---what are your long term goals in the profession. Do you eventually want to apply for a leadership role? If so, then you can't go wrong with a master's degree.

Or maybe you don't want to spend the money right now on a master's degree, and in that case, getting experience and then applying for jobs is also a possibility.

But if you just want to get in the field and work in a non-leadership role, then the master's might not be necessary, specially if you can get experience in the field like you're planning to do.

There is also the argument that those who have a master's degree make more money, but there are also people out there making just as good money without a master's degree.

I would suggest you read the thread pasted below as it is very related to your question and maybe comeback and ask for clarification if need be.

Thank you so much!

It was actually at orientation, that I sat next to the EHR instructor and she saw me breeze through the material and asked if I'd be interested in (eventually) becoming a super user -- I don't think they allow orientees to do this yet, so I am hoping that in a few months, I will be able to do so.

I am in no financial position to start a master's degree at the moment, but really appreciate your insight, and it's definitely something I will read up on. Thank you!
