best route to become a faculty in MN

Specialties Educators

Published

Hallo everyone,

I need some direction, and i appreciate any advice esp from current faculty members and nurse educators. ok some background, I am RN with BSN with over 4 years experience and im trying to identify what step is next for me for my nursing career. i am particularly insterested in the educator though i might as well be open to other option,

my question is where do i start do i just go for MSN with education focus or CNS, or PHD OR DNP then post MSN education, one thing i know for sure is i dont want to go the NP route for my personal reason and im also into midwifery, so is it possible to select specific area to teach?

please help:)

thank you

Hi,

It depends upon where you want to teach and whether conducting original research is important to you. A university job will require a doctorate with an active research component, whereas a job with a college will only require the MSN and be focused on teaching, rather than research.

In terms of selecting a specialty, you likely can do this. Many educator job announcements will look for specialization in med/surg, OB/Peds, Psych, etc. The key is to not limit yourself too much to one specialty, because they'll also want someone who is strong enough in another area to step in and teach a class if needed.

Good luck!

Hi,

I am an OR RN turned Nursing Educator. I work for a Hospital teaching new hires and I am responsible for a unit. I help with competencies, inform them of new equipment and teach them how to use it, I am also aware of mistakes made by staff. The mistakes made mean something went wrong in critical thinking. I go over the report and work with that person so they can present the mistake made to the rest of the group so it cannot be repeated again. I love what I do and I am sure you will love it too.

My suggestion is that you go from a BSN to MSN and to a DNP or EdD. It depends on the route you can afford or if you are really interested in Research you can jump from an MSN to a PhD program and then you will be able to teach in a University or College. It depends on what you really want to do.

Remember you have to love what you do to do well. Others are counting on you to teach them the right way to do things. Patients are counting on you to teach personnel what to do correctly. I wish you the best!

Hi NFJshane

thanks for reply, I would want to start with MSN before I can invest in PHD and I agree with u about not limiting myself to one speciality

thanks

Hi,

this is an interesting post , not the typical nurse educator route I was thinking about , it sound that you r enjoying it which is key , I would like to start with msn ed and still work as staff RN because I don't think my educator job might support me . Anyways thanks a lot for taking the time
