RN Pension Despite Frequent Province Moves as Military Spouse

Nurses Career Support

Published

Hi everyone!

I'm an RN who is married to a Canadian Forces member. I graduated and began my career last spring in Ontario, and joined my spouse in Manitoba late in the fall. Naturally, I have had to obtain my Manitoba nursing license and am now happily practicing on a busy acute medicine floor. It has recently occurred to me that with several moves in our future, seniority will be a serious obstacle for me. However, I am more concerned about how our moves every few years will effect my pension those many years down the road when I am ready to retire. Is there anyone who can speak to contributing to a pension plan while living in several different provinces over a career span? I understand we are contributing to a Canadian Pension Plan, but does this differ per province, and will it transfer with me as I go? I'm new to the military spouse scene, and am wondering how maintaining a fulfilling career of my own will marry with being moved so often. Has anyone else experienced this lifestyle?I would greatly appreciate any input available. Thanks so much in advance for your time!
