Picking or Changing Your Specialty

What kind of nurse do you want to be? Have you chosen a field only to find out that it's not the place you want to spend the rest of your career?

If you change fields, will you have to go back to school for continued education?

These days it's not as simple as just going to nursing school. There are a lot of factors while you're in school and knowledge and experience that you will gain in the years working after graduating that can point you in another direction entirely. You might be motivated by better hours, increased pay, more of a challenge or less stress when you start to think about a change, but what's the next step?

Furthering your education is usually a good thing, but the time commitment and added responsibility are things you should think about before jumping into another demanding program.

Some nurses, especially those with young children already feel like they don't get to spend enough time at home. There's no doubt that going back to school will open up new opportunities and probably increase your income after graduation, but what areas of specialty will give you what you're looking for?

If you are currently not satisfied with your working situation, first look at whether or not it is that particular workplace that you are dissatisfied with. Would doing the same job at another location be the solution?

You could save yourself the time and money of going back to school if you discover that it is the administration of your current job that is making life difficult and not the entire field of options you have at your education level.

After evaluating that, if you still find that a change of career is the best choice, make sure you talk to people in the specialties you are considering. Lifestyle is a big part of job satisfaction.

If you think you want to become a scrub nurse because it would be challenging, but you would hate the hours and added stress, then perhaps another avenue would be better suited for you. Whatever you decide, just make sure that you are asking questions so that you make a truly informed decision about your next step.
