One girl with a dream- should I do the BSN or RN to BSN?

Nurses Career Support

Published

I have a question I am interested in becoming a nurse and already have a bachelors degree... Would it be easier/ or should I apply to a RN program and then get the BSN or should I take prerequistes for the BSN program and then apply to BSN. WHich way would I more likely be accepted. I have a undergraduate degree in liberal arts no real science classes.

Thanks:yeah:

No one can say for sure -- because the answer to your questions depends on the particular characteristics of the schools involved. For example, the question "Which way would I more likely be accepted?" depends on how many applicants each program receives and how qualified you are (your GPA, etc.)

You will have to talk with each school to get the details on each program -- and then use that information to decide which program is the best fit for your needs.

Personally ... if you find that the two programs meet your needs equally well ... I would go directly for the BSN. It will get you the degree you will need in the quickest. You might also look to see if there is an entry-level MSN nearby that is designed for people like you with BS's in other fields already. Those programs tend to be quite challenging, but if you can handle it, you would graduate with a Master's Degree that will help your career long-term.

However, you might find that getting an ADN first at a local Community College is the cheapest way to go. You could then take a break from school and earn a little money before pursuing the BSN (which your employer would probably help pay for). That route is usually the cheapest ... but it usually takes longer.

You'll just have to look at the details of each program (including their costs and timelines) and choose the one that appeals to you most. There is no one best answer for everybody.
