New grad RN vacation time negotiation

Nurses Career Support

Hi all, thanks for taking some time to read this and help me out. I graduated this past May with my BSN. I got my RN, and worked for a couple of months at a camp over the summer as an RN, and am now back in Job Search mode. I am looking to take a vacation abroad for a week or two in January....I don't know if in this job market (I'm in MA) that I would be considered for hire if I requested time off so soon. Is it likely when you're negotiating a salary that a week or two of unpaid time off would be acceptable? I'm hoping to book a flight soon, but I don't know if I would even be able to get a job if they knew I needed that time off. Any good way of working with this or should I just cancel the trip? Is this even a huge problem?

Just wanted to update if anyone was curious. I got a part time 24 hr position at a hospital and my orientation starts mid January!! Don't have any money left from the summer anyhow after paying the first couple months of student loans and for my gas, so I'm glad that I didn't book a trip, it wouldn't have been feasible at all money wise or time wise! So happy I will be able to start my career without worrying.

Once you are hired for a job, then you can bring it up and say, "Hey, I already bought tickets and planned a trip" blah blah blah. But don't bring it up during interviews or anything. I know new hires who had a trip planned out and everything before they even got the job... they told the manager and she adjusted the schedule accordingly with no complaints and said she's try to make it work out....... and it did. If you work 3 days a week, then just work the 3 days before you leave and you're set for that week... ya have the rest of the time off. As far as taking TWO weeks off, I don't know.
