Homecare … who really cares?

Like many of my nursing colleagues , we are faced with the ever growing challenge of delivering patient care in the world of* greed.*Witnessing*the extinction of nurse leadership, who possess *expertise in clinical knowledge and* a go to” for staff as resource.*We are now bombarded with nurse managers who are forced to ignore the quality delivery of nursing and home care service* to focus* on delivering a profit margin to ownership that compromises patient care.

This profitability comes at a cost . A cost to the most vulnerable, the sick, the aged, and to the heart of the nurses .* Some of us are more vocal in our feelings, some will need to continue quietly, none of us wanting to be on the receiving end of the downsizing”* home care agencies are famous for.* That is when an agency looks to their payroll, fires those with the highest salary, or areas that are not as profitable*to increase revenue and call it lay offs. The irony is there is a nurse manager who will make those decisions because she/he has signed on to do it. Rationalizing why it had to be done, when in truth, those making the decisions made them to keep their own high paying jobs. So cut the workforce, and increase the amount of patient's seen a day. Equals less time in the patient's home to verify meds, perform head to toe assessments , confirm next md visits and instruct families and we are back in the hospital, not delivering the services the*homecare agency *got paid to perform, which is preventing hospitalization.

When we talk about health care reform, lets reform the owners of these companies the CHHA, LHCSA, the MLTC,stop scamming.* Hold the owners of these companies accountable for a business plan that compromises wellness at home
