Who will hire me??

I'll make this short and sweet for all of us.

I'm a Nurse and was diagnosed with Crohn's disease in 1993.

I became to ill to continue working in 2003.

I have been on SSD and LTD.

The insurance company dropped my LTD as soon as they received

their payback from SSD.

I'm not sure if this is legal, I'm still disabled and receiving SSD.

I have to find a way to make the money I've lost.

I want to try and work a couple days a week but

can only handle about 4 hours a day.

Who will hire me and how do I keep the job without FMLA protection

when I'm unable to work.

Any ideas??

Listen, first off sad to hear that your Crohn's Disease has gotten out of hand and forced you to remain out of work.

Have you heard about ExceptionalNurse.com? www.ExceptionalNurse.com It is a wonderful source of support, much like AllNurses.com! I am not sure what went on with your LTD. What exactly did the company say? Gather all the paper work and see about Legal Aid or a Disability-type Attorney.

What type of nursing did you practice? In many hospitals there seems to be a newer trend of alternative work hours being offered to Nurses. Let me check around and see if I can find any concrete websites for you (in your home state)

Thanks for being so thoughtful and responding to my post.

I think that the LTD Company got their money from my SSD

and decided to call it quits. They aren't out a dime.

I had the policy for 15 years with the hospital I worked for.

I was a oncology nurse and worked 12 hour shifts.

They often needed nurses to work overtime or

someone to come in for 4 hours. Usually 3p-7p.

That is what I wanted to try a couple days a week.

Anyway, when they got my medical records they saw that my Doctor

and I had been dicussing my wanting to try and volunteer

somewhere and if I could handle that then maybe I could

try and work a little. Obviously they ran with that and

decided I could return to work. I feel they should have

given me a chance with trying to do this, continue my

disability payments and go from there.

At least give me the opportunity and time I need.

They just took it upon theirself to close my claim.

I have been on the Exceptional Nurse site and plan

on really seeing what they have to offer.

It's really hard to stay well and take care of yourself

when your constantly fighting with insurance companies.

I hope and pray I find some answers.

I read your post and I see some of myself in it. I have severe interstitial cysitis bladder dx. I gave my employer 2 years of impecable attendance. My last year my disease progressed and I exhausted all of my fmla. I needed part time and there were no part time 8 hour shifts at all or no desk. My union did not really help me. My employer sent me after short of 21 year a certified letter to resign, return or go prn. I involuntarliy resigned due to medical based on legal consult. A LTD attorney told me once you ar out of the 12 weeks of fmla that's it your employer legally can be done with you.

Now my LTD is through my employer as well. I paid out of each paycheck. I had to fight to get it and the claims lady assigned to me was rude. 20 years I paid into it. With this employer plan IF i take any employment anywhere or part time job anywhere I willl LOSE My ltd . Nice huh. Like my therpist said they should want us to work a little even a few hours to see if maybe we could get off of LTD

Volunteering another good point. I was adviced by my pscyhologist, psyc mk , and this LTD attorney to do volunteer work. Like they said if you can't make the volunteer work then you can't do ajob

As for the fmla that's why I resigned. My therapist asked me with my disease could I work a whole year without missing a day . No. I want so bad to go back to work and SS does have return to work program. SS also will let you go back to work and work each month gross up to certain point only- have you checked into that. It's on their web site. You must work 1250 hours to qualify for fmla that's about a year. That's why I had to resign and that's why I am off on SS. I want to go back to work to try it but I have so much to lose on the otherhand the not working - and depression is worse.

Hope some of this helps you. VIcky I think also who will hire me? WHen they see the resume you have to account the time you were off somehow.

I had to stop worring about all of it and take care of myself. When I feel well enough to fight this and get back to work I'll do just that! We have to take care of ourselves because there's really no one else willing to help. Take care, Chris
