Transferring to another state

Nurses Recovery

Published

Hi everyone,

I have a question. I currently live in Texas and am a participant in TPAPN, the program for substance abusing nurses in Texas. I am getting a divorce and am unemployed so I am thinking about moving to either New York or Virginia where I have family. Does anyone have experience with transferring from one state to another? It would be great to have family nearby plus I am having such a difficult time finding employment. Your thoughts, please.

It depends on where you are moving from and to. Florida and CA have no reciprocity so you start over in both states.

I transferred from CT to AL after almost 2 years in the voluntary alternative to discipline program. There is no reciprocity between these states either, but it didn't matter in the end. Luckily AL had a similar program and I didn't have to go on probation. They got all the info from CT, I had to provide a ton of documentation (records from IOP, court docs, licensure status, etc.) - but then they simply started me at the same point in AL. they gave me credit for time served in CT :-). All I had to do was call to the BON, get contact info for their alternative program and then give them a call. It was a tedious process, but the outcome was perfect.

Thank you for your response. It sounds like you are happy with your decision. Did you experience any difficulty getting licensed to practice nursing in another state?

No, there was no trouble. Just a lot of hoops to jump through. Just make a list of all their requirements, tackle one thing at a time and be as patient as you can. It will be a long process - for me, it took about two months of daily attention from my first phone call until I had my license in hand.

I am new on my vdap contract and was wondering if you could give me an idea of how many drug screens I may have the first month? Now I hear they are doing hair test and I assume they are very expensive!! I am trying to find a job and am broke so worried about the cost of testing! Thanks for any advice you can give me:)
